I've read probably one hundred times google's webmaster guidelines and I haven't been able to find anything on most myths that are supposed to get your site banned or decrease your ranking. For example many top ranked websites for very competitive terms buy thousands of backlinks, which even matt cutts said will get your site in trouble, and they are still in the top 3 positions after several months. I totally agree with you.
